Our Projects
The Family Perspective Institute (FPI) is a newly established American institution dedicated to advancing rigorous research on the family's evolving role in contemporary society and identifying evidence-based approaches to strengthen families in fulfilling their vital social functions. We believe that thriving families are the foundation of healthy communities and a vibrant society. Our mission is to generate actionable knowledge that informs policy, practice, and public understanding of how families can be best supported.
About Our Approach
The Family Perspective Institute is committed to bridging rigorous academic research with practical application. We believe that the most valuable research:
-
Addresses questions that matter to families, practitioners, and policymakers
-
Employs methods appropriate to the research question, valuing both quantitative rigor and qualitative depth
-
Engages stakeholders throughout the research process
-
Communicates findings accessibly to multiple audiences
-
Contributes to building a cumulative evidence base for effective family support
-
Is addressed to families, who should be the beneficiaries of the initiative, through academic research and policy briefs.

Call for Research Projects
UNDERSTANDING AND STRENGTHENING THE FAMILIES ROLE IN SOCIETY

THEME 1
Family Wellbeing and Relationships
We seek research that examines how families build and sustain healthy internal relationships, with particular focus on:
-
Mental Health and Communication Skills: How family dynamics, communication patterns, and emotional support practices shape the mental health of children, parents, and caregivers. We especially welcome research on interventions that strengthen family relationships and foster resilience in the face of stress, conflict, or adversity.
-
Care and Intergenerational Support: The family's role in providing care across generations, including for children, elderly members, and persons with disabilities.
THEME 2
Families in a Changing World
We seek research on how contemporary forces reshape family life and functioning, particularly:
-
New Technologies and Parenting: How digital technologies — including social media, screen time, and AI-driven tools — affect child development, parent-child communication, and parenting practices. We welcome both studies of risk and of opportunity, including technology-based family support interventions.
-
Work-Life Balance and Modern Stressors: How families navigate geographic mobility, economic precarity, and shifting gender roles in the home.

THEME 3
Family Policy and Social Investment
We seek research that strengthens the evidence base for family-supportive policy, including:
-
Recognition of Unpaid Care Work: Research that documents, measures, and elevates the economic and social value of unpaid caregiving within families, with attention to how this work is distributed across gender, income, and community lines.
-
Return on Investment from Family-Friendly Policies: Analysis of the long-term social and economic returns of policies that support families — including parental leave, childcare subsidies, and flexible work arrangements — with attention to equity and scalability.
-
Unintended Consequences and Implementation: How family policies can be designed and adapted to avoid unintended effects and reach underserved communities effectively.
